Langston Hughes (February 1, 1902-May 22, 1967)

Langston Hughes was one of the most important writers and thinkers of the Harlem Renaissance, which was the African-American artistic movement in the 1920s that celebrated black life and culture. Through his poetry, novels, plays, essays, and children's books, he promoted equality, condemned racism and injustice, and celebrated African-American culture, humor, and spirituality.

Here's my favorite poem by Mr. Hughes:

Mother To Son
Well, son, I'll tell you:
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor --
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now --
For I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin',
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

"Mother to Son" is a classic. And I love Langston Hughes. I remember having to memorize this one for Black History Month when I was in the sixth grade. The grammar school I attended had a thing where each class had to recite together a poem by a Black poet. It was a long auditorium program on the day every single class in the building recited a poem. But as I look back, I'm glad we had that. Nice tribute!

It's been several years, probably a decade since I sat down and read the majority of Hughes's poetry. I should revisit it. Thanks for a refresher taste. This is a good one.

The poem is interesting in terms of metaphor and the way it conveys the message. I just like that and the authenticity with the whole language and dialect. Very nice.

(You knew I'd be visiting, right?) ;-D

I haven't read Hughes in AGES. Not since I devoured his poetry in college. Loved it. Think he's been overlooked and underrated in recent years, and that's a shame.

Thanks for posting this. Very nice.
I'll be coming back.
