Cursed Day Job!

First of all, Happy New Year again---I'm back! As for my topic, I'm sure every writer out there wishes that he/she could write full time and not have to worry about working, but it's just not a reality when you have bills to pay. Unless you're lucky enough to have someone else to pay your bills for you. I work and write full time. I am unpublished but I write every day so that that will change.

Working at a stressful job is quite draining and it tries to stifle your creativity. Notice I said, "tries" to stifle. You cannot allow the work day to ruin your writing at night or whenever you write. You have to relax and realize your dreams. Don't get me wrong, sometimes writers feel A LOT like this at work:

I promised myself that I wouldn't make any resolutions because most people never keep them, but since my other writer friends have posted theirs, I'll post what my plans are for 2008. These are in no way resolutions, just goals:
1.) Polish my completed novel (which I am almost done with!)
2.) Give to betas (who will edit thoroughly)
3.) Query agents (and get one this year)
4.) Get a book deal? (hopefully)
Numbers 1 & 2 are the easy part, 3 & 4, not so much, but I believe in my work and as Miss Snark would say, "Good writing trumps all!" With that being said, go forth and follow your dreams, whether you're a writer or not! :*)

Good goals.
May you reach them quickly.

Yep, you and me are both doing that query thing this year, gah!

BTW that work thing is why Rita Mae Brown recommends writers have manual jobs. Time to think. Not that I want you to switch jobs, just saying it's a recognized problem.

Love the picture! Best of luck on your polishing and querying. It does kind of suck the brain cells out.

I was wondering how the revisions were going. Keep that positive attitude about the writing. The day job will always try to loom in...

Bernita,
Thank you so much! :*)

December,
Working sucks when all you want to do is write. I don't consider writing work at all. I heard you wrote an urban fantasy. We'll have to talk. :*)

Kimber An,
Thanks! :*)

Gwyneth,
I'll stay focused! :*)

Anti-wife,
Thanks, I will! Feel free to visit anytime! :*)

Wow. Can't tell you how much this post SPEAKS to me. This is exactly how I feel and I agree that we're not alone in wishing the dang day job wasn't in the way of doing what we want full-time.

Here's hoping you (and I!) reach our lofty goals this year. It could happen!

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

Love the picture! But the cat looks like he/she is enjoying it.

Your goals are concrete and reasonable--more likely for your success!!!

happy belated New Year to you, as well.

It is also my number 1 goal to position myself to where I can make a good living from my thoughts & ink pen. Give me 3 years.

Good luck in your endeavors.

With regards to #2...

some of us are eagerly awaiting that one, y'know. ;)

Great goals - we are in very much the same position this year, I'm finishing my final revisions this month, then on to the betas.

Best of luck with your novel.

I am with you on all these goals! Best wishes to you and me to get them done!

And that picture reminds me of my husband always putting his hand on my brain and saying "what's this? It's a brain sucker starving to death!" Har har, so old - and yet he still does it all the time. Men.

Demon, my mother used to vacuum the cats as a way of dealing with their hair! Pure terror for them, unlike that cat.

If your WIP follows the three act structure, you should have no trouble reaching golals 3 & 4!

Cora Zane said...

Best wishes on reaching those goals, Demon. I have my fingers crossed for you. :)

The whole writing process does at times feel like it sucks the life out of you. (That kitty pic is a very good example, LOL!)

Happy weekend to you!

I had a dog who loved to be vaccummed. I'd start it up, and he'd sidle over to me.

Good goals!
Well, bad news here. Almost any job done well has its stresses. It's built in, and since the priority really IS to pay your bills, either you have to be an incredibly saucy minx and find some rich old sugar papa to pay them for you; find a higher paying job that involves less time and stress (ha ha); or what you're doing and just acknowledge the major suckage and proceed anyway.

But then again, the really rich sugar papa might not be a bad option.

Tyhitia Green said...

Kanani,
No rich sugar daddy. I have my boyfriend whose my age...lol. I'll just keep working and submitting! :*)
